Temmink: The Ultimate Fight plot

Somewhere in the near future 'The Arena' exists. Here men with an 'aggression gene', with which they do not want to live any further, can be allowed to fulfill their euthanasia wish. Life is ended prematurely through life and death fights, broadcast live on the commercial sports channel. Temmink, one of the gladiators, manages to win the first fight, befriends a colleague and also falls in love with one of the girls of amusement. He grows into a national hero and loses the will to die. But once admitted to 'The Arena' there is no going back...

I had pretty low expectations in itself and I postponed it for quite a while, but yesterday I really had nothing else available, so it had to be done!

Certainly no regrets. Very entertaining b-movie. The first scene can already smile appetizingly. Sometimes so incredibly clumsy, like that hand scanner, but could only laugh about it. The acting isn't very impressive either, but it didn't bother me at all. The story just wants to get a bit corny.

It's funny that Toine van Peperstraten presents the sport in this film, just like in everyday life.

The ending is pretty strong by the way, just a shame about the music. Then do an LM.C - Metally like in Shamo. It was exactly the movie I was thinking about at the end. I was so excited to see it again. I will definitely do that soon.

Just Dutch pulp this, however, would have been more resident.

3*

We don't really have a history of science fiction fiction in Dutch film, so in that sense it is a special film. Jack Wouterse plays an angry fat man who is crushed in the clutches of commerce and the public lust for violence as a gladiator in cage fights. The battles are nicely blunt and roughly portrayed and - despite the limited resources available to bring the world to life - a gloomy and convincing atmosphere is created. The two greatest assets are Jack Wouterse as the unpredictable colossus and Jacob Derwig as his fickle buddy. The film goes somewhat in-depth with a philosophical message about morality and the rules that are imposed on the individual. Of course it all looks a bit clumsy when you compare it with American genre contemporaries with similar themes (Fight Club, Running Man) but for some reason that has its charm.

This movie is tough boss. The concept has been completely exhausted in the meantime, but this film is also 13 years old and seems to me (certainly by Dutch standards) to have been quite innovative at the time. The fights were wonderfully rude and therefore realistic, but that's not all it's about: meanwhile, the film makes fun of the television company and more. I really thought Temmink was a genius character, the dryness of his dialogues makes it complete. Usually I don't like Dutch films, but I thought this was a hit. After revision 4.0* .
