There is technically a lot wrong with the film and also in terms of the plot is very easy and of a basic level. But that doesn't matter, because the film has a big heart and it's almost impossible not to watch with a huge smile. John Candy is super charming and the Jamaican bobsled team knows how to evoke all the empathy. If you don't get moved when they cross the line with the bobsled op, then there is something seriously wrong with you! Sometimes you have these kinds of films that are anything but perfect in many areas, but have such a big heart and are so innocent that you can't help but enjoy the film.

Cool Runnings is such a movie!

Cool Runnings is loosely based on a true event. In 1988, two Jamaican bobsleigh teams entered the Winter Olympics in Calgary without much success. Taking the four-man bob as its subject, the film had a budget of $14 million and grossed more than $150 million. A great success for an average humorous sports film with the well-known dramaturgy of trial and error, followed by a grand final competition in which pathos reigns supreme.

The view of Jamaica is as expected. Everyone wears colored shirts and knitted hats. Everyone is lazy, smokes and drinks. Oh yeah. Cool Runnings doesn't take his characters seriously at all and puts them away cliché. The bobbers' adventures in icy Calgary are funny. Pretty fun to watch the bobbers accustomed to tropical atmospheres struggling in snow and ice. Very exaggerated, but entertaining. The atmosphere is nice and airy. The humor is mostly bland, but it is contagious.

Cool Runnings by John Turteltaub is an amusing sports comedy whose story is so silly and exaggerated that you really have no choice but to join in on the folly. And then Cool Runnings is pretty fun.

Well-known title with an even more famous story, of course, 'loosely' based on, and from '93 again. Watching the film never came, but I was never really interested in it because I'm not that into comedy and the image that reminds me a bit of a children's/family film. But partly because of the stories of colleagues that this was such a nice film, I decided to give it a try.

And it must be said that it all starts a bit Disney-like and is even on the bland side with the push cart competition. The first meeting with Blitzer is also on the edge, of course he doesn't feel like it but of course he lets himself be persuaded. The Jamaicans are portrayed very stupid and smiling in that scene. In the end, it turns out that it doesn't take that much to persuade Blitzer to start training.

And it must be said that despite its predictability, the film is still gaining ground and can actually be called engaging. The training sessions don't exactly go smoothly and are filled with a lot of humor, the bonding between the four can be called quite nice. Their arrival in colder climes is also quite nice, but the first steps on the track are again very borderline in appearance and bob brought along. It's no wonder they are ridiculed, but it's that they are allowed to go down for a test run. It's nice how Blitzer, despite his own troubles and mistakes, hey how unexpected everything again, still manages to make a unity of those four and transform a 'bucket of rest' into a flashy bob. Oh, come on...

Cool Runnings is not quite my thing, that much is clear and it is a matter of pluses and minuses. But all in all, it's a decent movie for once, but that's about it.
