Must say that the new version with the new music and better image is well done. But it doesn't really give the atmosphere as if you are watching a movie from 1923. But that is often the case with Living Color Entertainment. These DVDs are often not with the original music. I still have two American DVDs with the original music. This music fits much better and makes the movie more fun. I also have to say that with this film it seems that they change the names of the characters Jehan' Clopin and Dom Claude Frollo. That's what makes it so confusing.

I think if you only know the Disney version and if you want to see the real movie adaptation then you should first see the one with the original story from 1956.

You have to see those other versions of 1939 /1982 / 1997, otherwise you will lose your mind completely. Then this one from 1923.

I thought the best part of this film was the beginning of Quasimodo standing on the balcony of Notre Dame and then climbing all the way down. But I'm going to take another look at this version.

Well, what music it is of course not good. My version had a hideous synthesizer with occasionally kitchy noises from large groups of people. The movie was fine though. I was very charmed by the atmosphere and huge compliments must go to Lon Chaney. Aside from his brilliant make-up, his physique is amazing. The way he dangles from those gargoyles and jumps on the bubbles is truly phenomenal. It perfectly gives Quasimodo's character the dynamism and training it deserves. Naturally, we are dealing with a grand story. However, I have seen the film more often and more captivating. For example, as far as I'm concerned, way too much screen time was spent on Esmeralda and her love. The storm scenes are of course impressive, but for me Notre Dame de Paris remains clearly the version of the story in which the elements are most prominent. The Hunchback of the Notre Dame is good and lays a very strong foundation for the further narrations of the story but unfortunately, despite its strong entertainment, it has been surpassed.

Romance and intrigue on an extensive historical canvas. Unfortunately, apart from Quasimodo, the characters do not really fascinate me and neither do the actors and actresses outside Chaney, but fortunately the impressive mass scenes, the beautiful sets, the beautiful costumes, the free, smooth direction and the strong acting of Chaney hold my attention sufficiently. , and the last quarter of an hour is still quite spectacular, so that in the end it leaves a very good impression. And Chaney is and remains a huge boss. (As seen on a 2001 DVD from UK's Dark Vision [yes, another distributor], in a mediocre but just about acceptable transfer with minimal extras including the filmographies of the three leads and the director plus 19 stills.)

Bizarrely, the fact that much of this movie takes place at the bottom of (Parisian) society is reflected in the hilarious first entry on IMDb's trivia page. According to Wallace Worsley Jr., the son of the film's director, many of the extras were recruited from downtown Los Angeles for $1 a night plus meals. Apparently among them were several prostitutes "who did a 'considerable sideline business' on the sets." Art imitating life, pour ainsi dire.
