Scam artist Harold Hill descends on River City to pull off his tried-and-true trick. He poses as a teacher for a boys' marching band and tries to get the local population to give money for such a band. He then tries to run away with the money, since he has no knowledge of music. Unfortunately, he is caught by a librarian and also falls in love with her.

Highly regarded musical from the 1960s.
Nice con story, some very good songs and choreographies.
Less... well, a bit subject to the genre, but remains a bit too saccharine at times and the love story between Preston and Jones occasionally holds up the story a bit (and is gifted with a number of lesser songs).
Well, we'd rather watch the classic Hollywood musicals than spend money on an evening of Joop van de Ende... which doesn't come close to this.
Well, musical is definitely a genre that works much better on film than in a theatre.

Good film about a smooth-talking con man who pretends to be a bandleader. A typical and grandly conceived, old-fashioned Hollywood musical. A simple story, but entertaining enough. Colorfully portrayed with beautiful costumes and sets. The songs mainly have a cheerful tone. A bit on the long side. Furthermore, a small role for the very young Ron Howard.
