My first Guinea Pig movie and if this is the standard for the rest of the movies I need to go find it soon!

The story is rather flat. There is no how or why. It is simply watching a mermaid die in a bathtub. Then it is crucial that it looks somewhat attractive, and it does! The make-up and effects are very convincing. Those lumps did not look healthy, but soon after that the pus flies around your ears and the bathroom is buried under masses of worms that were apparently also trapped in the mermaid's body. Mix the seven colors of pus, the black, smooth worms and liters of blood and you get a visual work of art. Enjoy!

Sick. Noticed here on Moviemeter that people are less inclined to like this kind of pus, tumors, mutation and crawling vermin. I think this is probably one of the more enjoyable parts. Fascinating might be the wrong word, but the transformation is at least a brilliant example of practical effects and with that black comic tone it balances exactly on the line between sadistic entertainment and downright insane. The fact that these films are presented in snack format is also nice. I have seen almost every film with a dubious (sick) reputation long and wide, but I wanted to keep this series. Gotta have something to still the ''hunger'' every now and then! Not much in this category is released these days, but the American Guinea Pig series is sufficient for me. However, it lacks all the humor and winks that still give these films the name ''entertainment''.

Director Hideshi Hino returned to the series three years after his famous second film, but he cannot breathe life into his qualities again with this part. With 63 minutes on the counter, Mermaid in a Manhole is the longest chapter in the Japanese series, although the logic of it escapes. The content is emptier than ever and only an excuse to stretch a rather foolish idea, but that same idea has little interesting to say apart from some dirty effects. The mediocre acting is not a new point for this series, but the particularly boring content actually is. The event often seemed not to end and therefore takes considerable effort to sit through, while the previous projects were a lot easier to get through.
