The mystery factor was very nice, but the many sex scenes were too much of a good thing, so that I could no longer label the film as "serious". If you are going to place bets in the cinema about how many minutes the next sex scene will come and who the next "victim" will be.....well.

a missed opportunity

Much better than I expected, this one.

Very good but thin story in a very interesting film of almost 100 minutes. And I think that is nicely done, because not much happened in it, apart from the numerous sex scenes (which I found to fit the film very well, and not at all disturbing).

The acting however takes the film to a whole new level. It is so well acted, especially by McGregor who is great (much better than his performance in stay which I saw earlier today) and Swinton and Mortimer are also very good.

I thought the ending was sublime, and the whole film had a beautiful but grim atmosphere.

a small 4* for this film.

What works is the beautiful visuals of the ship, the harbors, and all the debris that somehow seems to be part of it. It creates a truly compelling atmosphere that works and throbs. Just like McGregor's pounding with everything that moves, perhaps, though the element of believability is lacking a bit too much there.

Along the same lines, the story also feels a bit shaky. Don't the other characters really notice that Joe knows too much about the case at hand, that there's something fishy about it, while he himself practically dishes it out? And anyway, isn't it just a bit too coincidental how he finds her?

The cast is excellent, despite (because I usually don't like him at all) McGregor's leading role. And also despite Swinton's unusually close and weak performance, who practically has a patent on powerful, strong characters. And also despite the always convincing Mortimer, who actually has a much too small role. You'd wish them all a better script. And while Mackenzie might get the most out of this script, you'd also wish them all a director who would pick a better script. And perhaps he has indeed learned that lesson, judging by his list.

But despite all that, this film isn't all bad. The atmosphere is certainly well-crafted, and the soundtrack is also a perfect fit. Don't overthink it, though, as it won't improve the score—that's perhaps the most crippling issue.
