More of a fascinating curiosity than a really good film, nowadays less surprising because the twist was used more often and also the male role of Jean Arless (aka Joan Marshall) is not really a very convincing performance.
Kind of Hitchcock-like stuff but just not convincing enough.
As usual, director William Castle had also come up with something original, namely the Frightbreak .... one minute to leave the cinema for the denouement ... based on the heartbeat heard you can determine whether that might be wiser .

Good film in which a woman has a strange request for the bellboy of the hotel she checks into. Clearly modeled in many ways on Psycho, but the story is original enough. Although I saw the plot twist coming at some point, the course is difficult to predict. Jean Arless's double roleis certainly well done, but also a bit strange.

Attempting to cash in on the aftermath of Psycho. The film opens with an introduction by director William Castle, which is of course reminiscent of Hitchcock Presents. Furthermore, Castle plays with the subject of a murderous transvestite. The gore is also ramped up a bit here. The first kill is depicted graphically with a rapidly spreading bloodstain around the knife in the body.

Apart from the inspiration, this is a B-movie that does not yet reach the ankles of Psycho. Of course, the budget also has something to do with it. Even if Hitchcock pretended to make a low budget horror; 800,000 usd for Psycho is still a nice amount that many B-movies cannot reach.
Homicidal is a nice campy case, nothing more. Kudos to the double role played by Joan Marshall. I didn't realize it myself. It is also the film's most remarkable fact. Other than that, I didn't find it particularly outstanding in subtlety or wit.
