"...the stuff great entertainment is made of!"
Italy, 1953. In a small village, the new police sergeant attempts to court both the midwife and the local fury Maria (Lollobrigida). However, Maria has a crush on the young police officer from the North.

Film that was received with great sympathy at the time, where the presence of beautiful Gina Lollobrigida was not alien to the success, but also the social differences, which are often about in the film, which turned out in favor of "poor" in the taste. ("Don Camillo" was also in that mood).
Dreamy, sometimes with some black humor, love, of course, and a lot of fantasy...even in between the sandwich.
Gina is delightful and De Sica a brilliant chief of the carabinieri corps.
Still funny and sweet.

Gina Lollobrigida may be playing her best role in this little comedy of manners. La Bersagliera ("the sharpshooter") is a spirited folk figure who travels barefoot with her donkey. Vittorio De Sica plays a maresciallo with the carabinieri, but actually he is above all a charmer and bon vivant. One year earlier, he directed Umberto D. (1952) with Maria Pia Casilio, the same actress who plays the jealous parish assistant Paoletta here.
It is set in a fictional village a stone's throw from Rome. The Catholic priest had great moral authority. There were processions; people believed in saints and miracles. There was a lot of gossip. The two main characters are destined to marry, but not to each other. The age difference is too big for that. Backbiting and conservative morals stand in the way of the two marriages. The fact that a gendarmerie proposes to an unmarried mother caused quite a stir at the time. In the aftermath of neorealism, poverty is also a theme. The title refers to a tramp who eats dry bread - a fantasy sandwich. The saltarello rhythm in the music reinforces the folk character.

Not bad, but (and I must be the only one), I actually liked the third part, which I saw earlier. Pane, Amore e Fantasia is a bit too farcical for me. Nice that there is also some social criticism in it. I think the Sica and his silly walk are well cast for this series. Furthermore, it all goes smoothly, they are not busy filling the story but mainly want to show the funny situations. Nice, classic rom-com for a drizzly Sunday afternoon.
