What was this hopelessly romanticized piece of cannibal drama? The name Cannibal Holocaust is only attached to the film for marketing reasons and it is certainly not based on a true story. That sales trick was often used at the time.

While the film starts off pretty hard with the death of Catherine's parents, it quickly turns into a kind of 'how-do-i-survive-these-harsh-circumstances-and-how-do-i-learn-to-deal-with-my-parents-killers-while-they-don't-seem-to-be-that-bad' drama. Catherine's voice-over dub tells her events, but often something completely different happens on screen than what she says due to the incredibly bad acting. Mourning your parents, but meanwhile stoically looking at your mother's head on a spit.

The shock factor is no longer palpable after half an hour and some animal encounters and blood can't change that. The make-up wasn't special (except for the face-eating insects), especially not when you film with a far-zoomed lens on a latex suit to simulate wounds. Or those close-ups on eyes to show emotion, while their gaze is just as empty as the piece of paper that says 'script' above it. Audray does have a nice face, but please keep your mouth shut, and the soundtrack isn't as brilliant as Riz Ortolani's work, but it is still enjoyable. I want to and will quickly forget the rest.

Seen yet another movie from the cannibal/headhunter genre or something similar and yes, excess is harmful. I have become so accustomed to the gore in these kinds of movies that it leaves me cold. The nude scenes were also not that great, nor was the romantic story. I found the scene in which Catherine takes revenge on the death of her parents to be very bad and unbelievable. What makes this movie somewhat interesting to me are the beautiful images of the Amazon jungle. Very topical now because the destruction that is being caused there is now very much in the spotlight. For the rest, I think this is a movie to quickly forget.

Reasonable jungle film. The cannibal genre (as it was made great by the Italians) was already on its last legs here. But that didn't stop Mario Gariazzo from entering the green inferno and making a semi-cannibal flick (armed with a sample of Riz Ortolani's score from Cannibal Holocaust).

Despite the fact that it is entertaining and has some enjoyable gore here and there, Amazonia still feels a bit like a no-man's valley. It is just not brutal enough and not sleazy enough. Elvire Audray is fine as the half-naked Schiave Bianche, but you do miss a male character from that Italian cult scene. A Giovanni Lombardo Radice, Robert Kerman or Claudio Cassinelli type would have helped a lot.

This film was released in many countries at one point as Cannibal Holocaust 2. But it never comes close to that. Nice to have seen. Those Italian jungle films do have their charm. But not memorable enough for a passing grade.
