A bit of an unnecessary prequel to a film series that was clearly at the end of its rope with the third part. Part 4 is not too much of a good thing. Typical TV work too. The appearance is cheap, the score is cheap and the tension is missing. Fortunately, Perkins is still there and Psycho 4 is still quite watchable.

2*

Nice film in which Norman Bates calls into a radio program about matricide. Through good use of flashbacks, Norman Bates's childhood is explained by himself here. The sick mother-son relationship is further developed, but nothing new is told. Henry Thomas is well cast and Anthony Perkins does a great job in the title role for the last time.

A character study from the hands of director Mick Garris, who had detractors and fanatics. However, the opponents win the day and I understand why, but since I am not the biggest fan of the series, I happily welcomed the extra layers. The variety in events and situations provides an entertaining slant and the cast members perform surprisingly well, but ultimately you miss a certain sense of threat and underlying tension. Joseph Stefano's screenplay mainly has a dramatic slant that appears mixed and interesting and offers too few challenging factors. The far too sentimental finale throws some extra spanner in the works, but I had a lot of fun with the first half. Olivia Hussey in particular plays above average.
