With this film I came to the conclusion that I am increasingly becoming a fan of Robbert Bresson's style. The coldness fits perfectly with the story of Joan of Arc, but I must admit that I did not think the film added much compared to La Passion de Jeanne d'Arc by Carl Theodor Dreyer. I don't think this film is much more than a sympathetic undertaking, but one that lacks the intense emotional connection that its "predecessor" has. I think Procès de Jeanne d'Arc is a great film, but there are better film adaptations of the story.

Dry telling of the infamous trial against Joan of Arc, with some excess here and there. Bresson is guided purely by the legal documents and the documents of the rehabilitation process. His interpretation is that Joan of Arc is a strong young lady with witty and intelligent retorts that manages to undermine the process considerably. Florence Delay (an amateur like the rest of the cast) spits out the words sharply. Astonishing actually, I'll have to look for the text. Study material for theologians and lawyers.

It is even striking that Bresson interweaves a scene in the film in which he indicates that Jeanne's faith is a coincidence the light that shines through the hole in the wall of her cell, which she thinks is another apparition of an saint. Perhaps he, like me, thought that Joan of Arc was schizophrenic, or so deeply religious that fantasy overtakes reality. In any case, food for thought.

The film goes through the material very quickly (an hour). Bresson has purely used the most important developments from the 56 sessions, without too much embellishment.

I still haven't seen Dreyer's film (I already feel reviled by everyone here, a kind of modern Jeanne), but that seems like a film with a different intention/approach.

The trial of Joan of Arc is special and impressive because it is a religious process so that it is not even primarily about her (hero) role in the war: Joan of Arc believes that she has been sent by God and that she is being guided by the voices of saints, surrounded by angels about which the Inquisition asks serious questions in order to discover the truth, in particular whether she is actually guided by God or whether she is deceived by the devil. Her answers are intelligent and she is careful not to reject the Church or portray herself as a saint, which almost sets off a bizarre theological jousting with the stakes being whether or not she should be burned at the stake.

The film is based on the real texts of the interrogation, which is the strength of the film because, as mentioned, the process was fascinating. There is remarkably little emotion in the texts, which looks unbelievable and makes the film a bit dull, but I don't know what that was like in real life. In any case, Jeanne (2019) van Dumont makes the process a lot more hallucinatory than this very down-to-earth representation.
