Popcorn plot

"Buy a bag... Go home in a box."

Maggie is a film student who is plagued by strange and bizarre nightmares, but she makes good use of them and keeps a record of everything so that she can write a script for it later. But those are not her only concerns, she has to organize a film marathon with a group of other film students. Of course this will be a marathon of B movies, and in the best tradition of William Castle, the spectators are treated to some real shock effects. While preparing for this festival, the students also discover another film, The Possessor! A movie made by a movie sect. But the images in this film are very similar to Maggie's dreams and it turns out that one of the group is not us he seems.

Quite fun.

Popcorn is a well-known slasher among fans, but the general public may wonder what this film is about. With a number of 4,000 votes I cannot say that this film is a popular classic, but I was still able to see it and I enjoyed watching it all. Especially the first hour.

I will immediately admit that the environment in which the film is set is immediately beneficial. I love cinemas, and also horror events. Popcorn combines both, creating a very fun environment that I had no trouble getting through. Moreover, the effect is smooth and the entertainment level is high.

As you might expect, the acting isn't brilliant and Popcorn also lacks some good characters. Especially the last half hour, which is significantly less than the first hour, lacks a number of nice characters and especially a cool killer. While the first hour can still rely on fun, it then tries to develop a real story with depth and that results in boring dialogues spoken by boring characters.

It's not really that hard either. The slasher remains relatively tame and the bloodshed is shown to a limited extent. It's not really atmospheric either, but the film doesn't really aim for tension. It does take itself quite seriously, but otherwise the effect is quite funny and that works advantageously. Lots of fun ideas and a nice pace ensure that the relatively short playing time is never a problem.

I quite enjoyed watching the first hour. It wasn't boring for a second, and despite the fact that the film feels like an 80s film, I don't have much to complain about visually. It is certainly cheesy, but it is sharp and clearly presented. It's a shame that the pace drops during the last half hour, but that doesn't change the fact that this is an entertaining and fun film. Great addition to the horror world.

A late-period slasher that positively rises above the large crowd of (often sad) slashers from the late 80s and early 90s. The making of the film did not go smoothly. The film was initially directed by scriptwriter Alan Ormsby. He was replaced after a few weeks by a certain Mark Herrier. The film flopped and director Mark Herrier subsequently only shot shorts. Ormsby never directed again and devoted himself to writing scripts again. It was shot in Jamaica. This is not evident from the setting. This does explain the unusual choice of a performance by a reggae band.

The film takes place in a movie theater where a horror marathon is being organized. The program includes The Mosquito, The Amazing Electrified Man and The Stench. Fictional films that were devised by Ormsby especially for this film and fragments of which are shown each time. The screening of the films is accompanied by all kinds of gimmicks that are reminiscent of the gimmicks used by William Castle during the screening of his films. Very nice. The atmosphere is jovial but tense.

The heart of Popcorn is undeniably formed by the fragments from the fictional films that are shown on the silver screen to much cheering from the horror-loving audience. They form a fantastic setting for the actual story. They are a wonderful tribute to the monster and science fiction films of the 1950s. Watching the fragments makes you long for the full films. Which unfortunately do not exist.

In this pleasant atmosphere, a psychopathic killer appears who is doing a lot of housekeeping. Great kills. Excellent effects. Just good, but not exceptional in the slasher genre. The difference is made by the entourage. It is fantastic and makes your movie heart beat faster.

A horror comedy with a fun approach as a horror film about other horror films. A meta position that was taken more often in the postmodern 1990s. But is it really fun? Because it is certainly not exciting. No build-up, no suspense. A lot of talk. The location of the old cinema building is really great, but they could have done a lot more with it. The villain also looks evil enough, but is more of a talking head than active. The casting is otherwise okay. Jill Schoelen plays the leading role here as a film student in her late 20s and just barely gets away with it. What a beautiful husky voice she has.

Entertaining as a whole - even if it is neither exciting nor really funny - but it lacks that little bit extra anyway.
