Two contrasting personalities spend a day together. One is extroverted, reckless and impulsive; the other introverted, cautious and conscientious. In a Lancia Aurelio they drive through a country in full revival. Gradually you see Roberto's behavior change under the influence of Bruno. The atmosphere is mostly summery and light-hearted, although there is also a grim side, for example in the confrontation with Roberto's conservative rural family. The first overtaking maneuver foreshadows the tragic outcome.

Outdoor shots are combined with close-ups of a stationary car in front of a screen. Here and there a dummy or a body double is used. Italian hits and cheerful dance steps from that period are interrupted by small quarrels. It is a beautiful picture of the modern and hectic life that was gaining ground at that time, with its good and ugly sides.

Brilliant character study and picture of social atmosphere and times.
The leading roles are played by Jean-Louis Trintignant, as the shy student without much life experience, and Vittoria Gassman as the flamboyant playboy and smooth talker.
Among the many beautiful scenes in the film, the one in which Robert feels like the fifth wheel among his own family members, while Bruno, unknown to them, immediately charms them - and this on several levels - is representative of the story.
But there is a downside to everything.... While Bruno's less good sides are revealed, Roberto would not do well to admire him too much and to want to follow him...
Beautiful film that fits into the gallery of impressive Italian cinema from the early 1960s.
Film that owes much to the beautiful performances. Gassman steals the show and provides the comic note, Trintignant is at least as good in his sobriety.

Beautiful road movie/comedy that is also a beautiful period document of Rome and its surroundings in the early 1960s. At the beginning of the film we see Vittorio drive into St. Peter's Square in his car: there is hardly a person to be seen and there are a few cars parked. Very different times. Apart from that, it is a commedia that does not mince its words and breaks all kinds of taboos with humor (it seems to me). Adultery, family secrets, the road to success, the meaning of life, seizing the day ... it is all there. It is also and above all a film about a class society and a reflection on the relationships within it. Vittorio Gassman seems to have succeeded in life with his flamboyant style, towards the end he turns out to be a bus driver in everyday life (which does not match what he radiates) and his frustrations increasingly surface. Jean-Louis Trintignant is somewhere on the other spectrum - seriously occupied with his studies and a boring life - and moves more and more towards the style of Vittorio. The ending is surprising and would later - like the whole film - be an inspiration for counterculture cult movie Born To Be Wild.
