Solid entertainment with the familiar concept in which a large group of spiders turns a small apartment complex upside down. However, director Ángel Gómez Hernández's approach is different than you might expect, especially because it focuses more on the camp factor than on underlying tension. The spiders are a completely fictional species and do the most insane things, the finale is completely bonkers, and the characters border on the cartoonish. Yet, all of this feels more like a kind of emergency brake than a well-considered decision, as Crawlers turns mainly to more subtle forms in the first fifteen minutes. It is all rather thin and rarely exciting, but it is very entertaining, and the effects as well as the dynamic camerawork come across strongly.
