Director Ryan Ebert does not have a particularly impressive oeuvre, and unfortunately, a film like Summerween will do little to change that. Nevertheless, it all comes across better than the low average rating might lead you to believe, as this whole thing benefits from its nice and simple setup. Halloween, a killer escaping from an asylum, and a bunch of teenagers at a party—you don't need much more, and Summerween doesn't attempt to be much more either. It is regrettable that it generates little tension otherwise, and the murders in particular come across as cheap and rushed. Some off-screen hacking here and an implication there; you really need to be of better quality to come up with something substantial within this type of slasher. Ebert and his team hit mediocrity at best.
