An interesting, albeit rather depressing, documentary about the residents of St. Lawrence, a small island in the Bering Sea. Whaling is a matter of life or death there, but a lack of understanding leads to Chris Apassingok, the youngest person ever to harpoon a whale for his village, being attacked online by thousands of internet activists. It is just one of the problems the residents have to deal with, alongside climate change and high suicide rates, for example. Beautifully filmed, with many lovely shots of the bleak landscape, but substantively just a little too superficial to make a real impression, no matter how sincere and empathetic the intentions of directors Peter Chelkowski and Jim Wickens may be.
