A decent science fiction mystery. The story is quite well put together and revolves mainly around science and the ethnic dilemmas associated with it. So don't expect a sci-fi spectacle. The execution is somewhat inconsistent, though. The film remains engaging, mainly due to the interesting discussions and considerations. A downside is that, as a viewer, you don't really empathize with the characters. It doesn't really manage to move you. The acting is decent, and Fuhrman delivers a believable performance. Visually, it is otherwise fine. 3.0/3.5

A sci-fi film like so many we've seen before, but quite nice. The film focuses on communication between us and extraterrestrial life; in that sense, you could consider Close Encounters the original of this. Naturally, it incorporates a personal theme of grief and loss, and the film drags on a bit too long without much happening. I also find that Brit as the cynical old brilliant scientist a bit over the top (and we've seen that very often in all sorts of guises). But as a lighthearted hour and a half of entertainment, it's fine.
