Ladies First plot
The successful and immodest Damien has it all: money, power, and many fleeting affairs. But just as he prepares to become CEO of a chic advertising agency, his life is suddenly turned upside down when he wakes up in his worst nightmare: a parallel world dominated by women. He comes face to face with the fierce and fearless Alex, a woman who was one of his undervalued employees in his previous life. Now that the rules of the game have changed and Alex is at the peak of her abilities, the two vie for the top position.

Good film about a misogynistic boss whose life takes an unexpected turn. A great setup for this satirical comedy. Entertaining, and sometimes sharp dialogue (especially lots of fun puns). Sacha Baron Cohen and Rosamund Pike undoubtedly had a lot of fun with their roles.

I remember a joke by Theo Maassen about an upside-down world with a female pimp, how you get all kinds of gifts and have sex, until that one question: do you want to have sex with a girlfriend of mine sometime?
It's a nice joke, and this film revolves around that idea with enough fun adaptations to the world, but still, it could have been much funnier, sharper, and more interesting. As it is, you get a stale story in which the main character undergoes a transformation and becomes a good person.
Wouldn't it have been much funnier if he was actually satisfied with his new role? For example, with Rosamund Pike, with whom he has to have sex to climb the ladder but doesn't mind (because, for instance, he first tried that in his own world as a requirement for her career advancement). And then doing the housework and grabbing a beer with the neighbor at 4 o'clock for tea. That would be a very different message (maybe no message at all), but it would have been a more interesting premise. Or that, with his knowledge of the male world, he eventually becomes the alpha male there. There are so many possibilities and extra layers hidden within, yet people choose the safe route.
Nevertheless, quite nice thanks to the fresh acting and good pacing; I didn't get bored. The film is a remake of a French Netflix film, and it also features a remake of Gary Jules' Mad World (which is itself a cover of Tears for Fears). Now I think: it would have been nice if all the music had been covers, preferably French songs translated into English. But I think that would be asking too much. 3.0*.

Who would have expected Sacha Baron Cohen to make such a cowardly and boring film? Who would have expected Rosamund Pike to want to play such a bland bad girl? The mortgage has to be paid, apparently. And then the supporting roles. Charles Dance, for goodness sake. Emily Mortimer—well, at least she has a fun scene, although I wonder how she explained it to her family—after all, it’s not exactly the same as 'Mom, I got a role! Yes, with lines!'
The story is as if it rolled out of an AI. And besides that, it is a remake as well—of a French film, and I dare say, without having seen it, that this one will be fresher and more vicious, although cowardice strikes mercilessly in French cinema too.
And the question at hand is perhaps exactly who the makers think they are serving with this. No one is going to gain new insights from this film; it is all far too bland and cautious for that. No one is going to change their behavior because of this—or her behavior. This is the kind of film that everyone who has seen it has already forgotten the next morning. Fodder, and of the most reprehensible kind at that—fodder with a lazy, politically charged veneer, but without the slightest intention of delivering a message, of making the world that tiny bit better.
I expect nothing better from Netflix than this kind of cowardly viewing material. But from Cohen, from Pike, from Mortimer, from Dance... I just hope they enjoy their silver coins, because it does feel somewhat like they sold their souls for something very, very cheap.
