Juste une Illusion plot

"A comedy about that period of childhood when the hope of changing the world was not “just an illusion”..."

It's 1985. Vincent, almost 13, lives in a middle-class family in a Parisian suburb, surrounded by a distant older brother and parents who constantly argue. Now that he's "no longer" a child and "not yet" an adult, we share his questions and doubts about identity, friendship, family, religion, desire, and first crushes.

This coming-of-age drama is set in 1985, just before the 13th birthday (and Bar Mitzvah) of Jewish-Arab-French Vincent [Simon Boublil]. He has to hide a VHS tape he secretly rented with his friends; his brother Arnaud [Alexis Rosenstiehl] is making a fortune selling bootlegs; his father [Louis Garrel] doesn't want his mother [Camille Cottin] to discover he has been fired; his mother is a neurotic who imagines everything. Vincent has to write an essay with the girl [Jeanne Lamartine] he has a crush on, but who initially wants nothing to do with him. This well-acted coming-of-age drama gets stuck halfway through in amusing but disjointed anecdotes. It recovers in the final quarter with a moving denouement. Pierre Lottin is hilarious as the benevolent but slightly too present neighborhood overseer and handyman.

Quite a nice movie. It had a few nice touches.

The film gives you a nice feeling. Which is, of course, the intention of a feel-good movie.

Quite a sugary sweet trip down memory lane (or rather than a Proustian madeleine, because it is set in France). Also, a different France than we see in recent films like Les Miserables or Athena. Or different from the total mess they made of it this weekend (although it is, in itself, quite French to riot every now and then). A whole lot whiter, even though the film is set in a small town just outside Paris, not exactly in the real banlieues.

The emphasis is sometimes placed a bit too much, with songs from that era suddenly appearing without really fitting the visuals. It is a pleasant film to watch (and that is why it scores a passing grade with enough fun moments), but also somewhat naive and incredibly slick, where any form of drama is skillfully kept to a minimum. A single moment is suddenly much more realistic, such as the conversation between Mom and Dad at the car wash. That is a rare moment where there is genuine drama with real people and real dialogue. 3.0*.
