An emotional documentary about the band's early years, with special attention to the influence of original guitarist Hillel Slovak, who passed away in 1988. The limited scope is frustrating—for instance, the documentary ends at the definitive breakthrough—but the candid interviews with Flea and Anthony Kiedis make up for a lot.

Anthony Kiedis and Michael Balzary were troublemakers living day by day in Hollywood when they got a ride from Hillel Slovak, the then-guitarist of local rock band 'Anthym'. The three formed a close bond and founded Red Hot Chili Peppers a few years later. Forty years after Hillel's death, his influence on the band remains immense, and the pain over his passing is still palpable when his former bandmates and successor John Frusciante speak of him. Not only a portrait of a true punk and funk band, but also of a close friendship and a sketch of the musical scene in Hollywood in the early 1980s.
