Mo Ihattaren – De Beproeving plot

This documentary shows how Mohamed Ihattaren, once the golden boy of Dutch football, goes off course after his father's death. Failed transfers to top international clubs and negative press about alleged ties to the underworld jeopardize his future. Mo, now 23, went through a difficult period but is now trying to regain the trust of his family and the football world. How will he do it?

Moroccan-Dutch footballer Mo Ihattaren joined PSV's youth academy in 2010 and emerged as a super talent in 2018-2019. After his departure to Juventus in 2019, things went downhill rapidly, largely due to his father's death from an illness that Mo (the only one in the family) was unaware of for a long time. He's getting yet another chance at RKC. Youth coach Mark van Bommel, sports psychiatrist Bram Bakker, and former VI editor Johan Derksen offer some insight, but it's all too easy to link Ihattaren's erratic behavior exclusively to his father's death. Unfortunately, that's exactly what Van Maanen and program maker Joel van den Heuvel do here. If you're allergic to auto-tune, you'd better steer clear of this one.
