A lonely Frankenstein travels to 1930s Chicago to enlist the help of Dr. Euphronius in creating a companion for himself. The two revive a murdered young woman, and the bride is born. 116 years after his "birth," Frank [Christian Bale], the creation of Dr. Frankenstein from Mary Shelley's novel, is tired of wandering. In 1936 Chicago, he asks Dr. Euphronius [Annette Bening] to make him a bride. The choice falls on a recently murdered young woman [Jessie Buckley]. But this intended bride proves difficult to control, partly because the ghost of Mary Shelley [a dual role for Buckley] uses her to vent all sorts of feminist frustrations. Beautiful sets and polished cinematography are the only redeeming qualities of this mess. It begins as a romantic black comedy, degenerates into a pathetic, feminist inclusivity melodrama, throws in a musical number, and ends as a gangster melodrama with a finale that seems rather emphatically ripped from a crime classic. The grotesque play of Bale and (especially) Buckley will be reason enough for many not to even sit through this!
