Because he wasn't born until 1949, Jan Brokken could never grasp what his parents and brothers endured in the Japanese camps on Celebes. He has written three books to date, detailing the largely concealed history of his family and their fellow sufferers. Now he travels to Sulawesi (formerly Celebes) in an attempt to get closer to his family history. Brokken is full of anecdotes, and Toisuta fills the rest of this superficial documentary with quotes from Brokken's books and picturesque images that reinforce the stereotypical (and outdated) image of Sulawesi. Nothing new under the sun.
