Een Vrouw als Monique plot

Actress Monique van de Ven arrives at her seaside vacation home to prepare for her new film about an aging actress. She's brought scrapbooks filled with memories from her impressive oeuvre of more than fifty films. Images of the woman in her beach house echo images from her films, and images from her films intertwine with events from her own life. When a young man with a broken bicycle arrives at her house, they strike up a conversation. His youthful open-mindedness and curiosity challenge her to delve deeper into her career and the stories behind it.

Monique van de Ven retreats to a fisherman's cottage on the French coast to prepare for a film about an aging actress reflecting on her career. Young Dutch cyclist Bastiaan (Joes Brauers) comes to Monique for help after a nasty fall and stays with Monique until Monday, when the local bicycle repair shop is available. Bastiaan recognizes Monique, and what follows is a frank conversation about her career. This captivating blend of drama and documentary is effective thanks to the engaging interplay and the decision to explore the essence of Van de Ven's films through her personal experiences. An original and captivating portrait of one of the most important Dutch film actors.

Yes, a bit silly; the film as it appeared in cinemas apparently lasts 81 minutes, but the version shown on television in Het uur van de wolf clocked in at 66 minutes, so if users here are complaining that they missed certain things, I can report that I missed much more, namely about 20 percent of the film. How strange, with the Classic Albums series I’ve gotten used to the episodes being cut down to 50 minutes (I assume that happens because the producers hope the *real* fan will eventually buy the DVD with the official 75-minute version), but with a film like this… Anyway, there was plenty left to enjoy, because unlike many online reviews, I had absolutely no trouble with the structure: for to me, it was simply Monique van de Ven herself philosophizing with an imaginary conversation partner about her life and her films, and more than enough interesting things came up. Good acting from both, an interesting retrospective on the career of the greatest female film star we’ve had here, a beautiful nostalgic atmosphere, and as a bonus, various stunning shots of the Breton landscape and the beautiful sea.
