The North plot

Ten years after becoming best friends and roommates, Chris and Lluis embark on a 600-kilometer hike through the Scottish Highlands. They'll follow the West Highland Way and the Cape Wrath Trail, spending 30 days together in nature, hoping to rekindle their once-strong friendship. The solitude and silence of the Highlands force them to confront harsh realities about themselves, their friendship, and what it truly means to pause and listen.

Chris [Bart Harder] and Lluis [Carles Pulido] try to rekindle their friendship, which has fizzled out over the past 10 years, by hiking the Cape Wrath Trail in Scotland in four weeks. Chris regularly receives calls from colleague Tom [Matthijs van de Sande Bakhuyzen], while Lluis wants to rely less on technology. Naturally, both men undergo spiritual growth while we watch beautiful images of Scottish nature, and a large portion of the film's running time is wasted on shots of the men walking without a word. A slow, meaningless, and utterly predictable nightcap.

The ultimate walking film exists and it's called The North.

Without any compelling off-screen music (you wouldn't take a walk through the Scottish Highlands with headphones on, after all), accompanied only by ambient sounds and edited to the rhythm of walking, the film depicts the fluctuating moods of two men who were once housemates. In a leisurely pace of exploration, experience, and friction, we accompany the two as they mostly walk and talk sparingly.

It's clear the film isn't meant to entertain. No fancy filmmaking, no added music, no arcs of suspense, no subplots (romantic or otherwise), and no catharsis at the end.

Slow, telling, and unpredictable for those looking to be entertained—to contradict mrklm below. A breath of fresh air.

A good film about two friends who reunite after years and go on a weeks-long hike through the Scottish Highlands. And there's no shortage of beautiful images of the place. Shot without any embellishment (there's no music, for example). The film can't help but be a bit long-winded (especially considering its length), but ultimately contains plenty of beautiful moments and is subtly acted by the two leads. A small 3.5 stars.
