"A life of debt, of endless noise, am I to blame?"
Woo-Sung is an average office worker in his thirties. He has managed to buy his own apartment, which was his lifelong dream. To buy the apartment, he used all his savings, took out loans, and even used his mother’s garlic plantation. He is now struggling to pay off the high-interest loans. What makes matters worse is that he is bothered by constant noises from his neighbors, which brings him into conflict with them. Woo-Sung then works with his upstairs neighbor Jin-Ho to find out the source of the noises. Meanwhile, Eun-Hwa, a representative of the apartment complex, tries to keep the peace in the building.

A film that literally and figuratively races by. If you suffer from migraines, I wouldn't watch this. I found it quite exciting and well-acted, but I was glad the hellish ride was over by the end, due to a slight headache...

A must-read for anyone who lives in an apartment—and anyone who thinks we have a "housing shortage" in the Netherlands. Noh Woo-sung pays around €700,000 for his place—I've just done the math. It's not too bad, except that the neighborhood doesn't exactly resemble downtown Seoul. But who knows, I've never been there.
The story is funny and well-conceived, but Kim Tae-joon might be biting off a bit too much with all the twists and turns towards the end. And I'm not sure I fully understand the ending. But it's certainly entertaining—and also quite confronting for anyone living in a big city. It makes Mom's place a lot more pleasant. I would know, if I were Woo-sung.
The closing credits music is worth listening to in itself. I also get the feeling that a tremendous depth of detail remains lost in translation, but even then...
