Trainwreck: The Real Project X plot

In 2012, a teenage girl in the Dutch town of Haren creates a Facebook event for her sixteenth birthday party, but accidentally makes it public instead of private. Inspired by their love of the Hollywood film "Project X," Dutch teenagers make the event viral and soon tens of thousands of people register to attend the party. Despite warnings, the police and local authorities believe no one will show up. No facilities are made to entertain the masses of young people who arrive in Haren, and the party quickly turns into a full-blown riot.

I heard a bit about Project X at the time, but there was less of a fuss about it in the south. I was in high school at the time and hardly remember it being an issue among the young people here. The event is of course a perfect example of how much something can escalate because of a single button on a social media platform. For that reason alone, the subject is extremely interesting and I wanted to see it. The documentary itself, however, is not of great quality: it does what it's supposed to do, but the fact that everyone is forced to tell their story in English gives it a very plastic feel.

2.5*
