Mediocre horror film. The story isn't particularly special and is somewhat reminiscent of Martyrs. The execution is somewhat lacking because the focus seems to be on the gore, while the story lends itself perfectly to a suspenseful mystery horror film where the strength should lie in less is more and a wtf twist. Unfortunately, they choose to show everything explicitly, which comes at the expense of the suspense. Visually, the film is decently shot with good makeup and effects. The acting is otherwise of a sufficient standard. 2.5

A mediocre horror film that often comes frustratingly close to a higher rating. The script is quite well-crafted, with plenty of creepy and surprising elements. The film's structure is also exciting, culminating in a satisfying finale. Unfortunately, there are also drawbacks. Pete Davidson is rather miscast in the lead role, and the film's visual ambitions are too limited for the budget. The climactic storm that presages the entire film, in particular, ultimately looks rather clumsy. But thankfully, the film is never boring.

Toss Get Out, Shutter Island, and Rosemary's Baby into a blender with a spoonful of lovecraftion protein powder and you'll get The Home.

A hugely entertaining horror film with an excellent twist. Yes, standard horror tropes, but well-developed. Strange dreams, what's real and what's not. Strange chats and overly happy older people are always creepy in a horror film.

That ending was really satisfying!

Max is working in a nursing home as part of a community service order. It's a new world for him, but he notices some strange behavior from both the residents and the staff. There's also talk of a fourth floor he's not allowed to access. After a questionable death, he knows for sure: something's not right in the nursing home.

Before the film goes off the rails, director and writer James DeMonaco (The Purge (2013)) succeeds in imbuing the nursing home with an ominous and somewhat somber atmosphere. An atmosphere that suits the character of Max, who is grieving the suicide of his brother. The events in the home are curious and intriguing, and are told with a fitting sense of reality. It could be possible, the viewer wonders. So far, so good. We're watching a film that sprinkles in some suspense and builds tension quite effectively. Pretty good.

Not much actually happens. The protagonist observes odd things. That's about it. Because little else happens, the tension wanes. So does the interest. Things don't progress very quickly, and while other films sometimes try to provide visual entertainment, The Home doesn't. The Home is certainly not a visual feast. Bland, bland, and dusty are words that come to mind when I think of the story's visualization.

It just sort of drifts along until the revelation of what was supposed to remain hidden from Max arrives. Too big a leap for me. Very unbelievable. Very desperate, too. As if the creator knew he had to add something to maintain the watchability, but couldn't find any suitable inspiration. I also didn't think Pete Davidson's lead role was strong. He falls short dramatically. The Home has good moments, but just as many uninspired ones. A nice balance, though.
