What a relief.

I wasn't overly enthusiastic based on the initial footage, but this turned out to be a really cool film. An interesting premise, but otherwise a rather simple progression (although there are a few odd twists). But it's primarily Scarlet who has to try to escape the afterlife.

I think the switch to 3D is a great success; the epic feel works well, and the story, despite a predictable ending, also works well. It's one of the few films I'm glad I saw on the big screen. I've seen a lot of criticism of this film, but that seems to come mainly from fans of his older work who can't handle change.

4.5* and an extensive review

Phew, this wasn't easy. I don't watch enough anime, and this was only my first from this director. I expected more from his older work, because I really didn't find much here. And that's mainly due to one thing: a terrible script. The story is unbearable. It doesn't flow smoothly. It's completely uninteresting, but also so present that I couldn't ignore it.

What there are, however, are quite a few beautiful scenes. Those dark, infinite worlds in particular looked beautiful, and the film's occasional more abstract moments are also quite enjoyable. That's why I can't really go low.
