Oh well. It is a film that is right up my alley and therefore scores a barely passing grade, but I also quite understand why it isn't exactly a huge hit. Shaman is a folk horror/exorcism film by the book; a beautiful setting in the Ecuadorian Andes, where a missionary family lives in a small, remote village to bring the Word of God, education, and some provisions to the local population. But you can see the plot coming from miles away, especially when (as the title suggests) local religious rituals are also taking place. The setting is nice, the atmosphere is fine, and it doesn't drag on too long, but the whole plot about Elliott being possessed by a demon and the accompanying exorcism business—I have seen that countless times before, and usually in a more convincing manner. Often with better effects and a better cast, too. But for the atmosphere and the scenery of the Andes, I'll give it a rounded-up 3 stars.
