Theo [Benedict Cumberbatch] and Ivy Rose [Olivia Colman] have a good income, a beautiful home, two lovely children, and a stable relationship. Until Theo's reputation as an architect suffers a massive blow just as Ivy's small fish restaurant suddenly becomes a huge success. Now Olivia is responsible for the family's finances, and Theo dedicates himself to raising the children. This ultimately leads to jealousy and resentment. The film adaptation of "The War of the Roses" can't quite live up to the American version with Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner due to its grim tone. The "war," which is supposed to be the focus, is unfortunately rushed, making the denouement ridiculous, even though it's certainly not meant to be taken seriously.

A good film about a married couple whose love has faded after years. Not the most original film, but well-executed. Good, sometimes sharp, dialogue. Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman are wonderful together, convincing in both their love and their hatred for each other. A nice ending, too.

For a long time, the film is heading towards a solid passing grade. More drama than comedy, a beautiful portrait of two people who grow slightly apart due to a change in their lives but still try to make the best of it. And it raises interesting questions about gender and expectations regarding it. A truly excellent film. But in the last half hour, it shoots itself in the foot. Then it veers towards comedy and especially hysteria, which I found far too exaggerated and completely unbelievable. And truly not funny at all. Such a shame. It's also strange how the film ends with a sort of joke while two children in Florida are at risk of becoming orphans. I found that very odd. However, there was too much good stuff in it for a failing grade, so just barely a 3.0*.
