In 2020, Strømdahl filmed the life of a poor American family living in a cheap room above a restaurant with discreet, hidden cameras. The complexity of the relationships between Jason, Tonya and their 12-year-old son Mikal lends authenticity to this. Jason is a functioning alcoholic (we only see him come home dead drunk at the beginning), Tonya has not worked since Mikal was born and drinks all day long. Of course, there are serious arguments. Especially about Mikal's fluctuating grades, his mental health and his parents' drinking, but there is also genuine love. A nuanced, raw portrait of living with alcoholism that lacks a storyline, but remains captivating and has an unforeseen denouement.

10% of Americans cannot afford a proper home and therefore live in hotels and other 'flophouses' and 10% of American children have at least one alcoholic parent. This documentary shows such a family in a flophouse. What is striking is that despite everything it is a loving family - there is no lack of love, although constantly saying that you love each other may be a bit American - but the living conditions are still miserable: the boy lives among the junk with his parents only separated by a curtain from a mother who completely indulges in her addiction and neglect while the working father tries to keep the relationships good and the family on track and to give the boy a future. In fact he seems to succeed, but the life shown at the bottom of America is still harrowing.
