L'Inconnu de la Grande Arche plot

At the initiative of French President Mitterrand, an open call in architecture is launched in the 1980s. To everyone's surprise, it is won by the unknown Johan Otto von Spreckelsen, who teaches architecture in Copenhagen and has only designed four buildings to date, including his own house. From one day to the next, von Spreckelsen becomes a household name who is given the important task of building La Grande Arche.

To the surprise of many, the unknown Danish architect Johan Otto von Spreckelsen [Claes Bang] wins a design competition for what is to become 'The Grande Arche De La Défense' in Paris. President Mitterrand [Michel Fau] wants the 'cube' completed in time for the bicentennial celebrations of the French Revolution on July 14, 1989. Von Spreckelsen's refusal to deviate from his original vision drives budget overseer Jean-Louis Subilon [Xavier Dolan] and architect Paul Andreu [Swann Arlaud], who is formally in charge of construction, to despair. It begins as a farce (featuring a hilarious, dryly humorous Fau), but gradually evolves into a tragedy about a man stricken with pride for whom one can find little understanding or sympathy. Uneven and unsatisfying.
