Den Sista Resan plot

Popular TV presenter, podcaster and author Filip Hammar takes his 80-year-old father Lars on a road trip to the places they went on holiday to when Filip was little. Lars has been retired for almost 15 years. Lately, he has been experiencing some minor ailments and is increasingly reluctant to leave the house. Lars’ wife, Tiina, feels that something needs to be done and decides to contact Filip. The road trip becomes a more meaningful experience than expected when Filip realises that his father’s physical condition is gradually deteriorating and that no amount of exercise, activity or care can change that.

Well-intentioned, sympathetic but ultimately somewhat simplistic documentary about popular TV presenter Filip Hammar who takes his 80-year-old father Lars on a road trip to the places where they went on holiday when Filip was little. Enough nice and touching moments, but sporadically also a bit on the bland and artificial side.

Lars Hammer was a passionate, idiosyncratic French teacher and for years drove every summer with his wife Tiina and son Filip to spend their holidays in the French Riviera. He has been retired for years, but due to a mix of physical ailments and general gloom, he spends his days mostly in his chair as if he is waiting for death. Son Filip rents an orange Renault 5 (the model they used to own) to take his father to the South of France one more time and takes his good friend Fredrik Wikingsson along to “cheer up” Lars. Filip and Fredrik are well-known television makers and this so-called 'documentary' therefore contains many moments that are clearly staged. You also quickly get the feeling that Filip is making this trip (and this film) mainly for his own honour and glory. Whether he succeeds in this is fortunately easy to read from Lars himself, who at least does not have to act his emotions. Artificial, manipulative, but with a few nice moments.
