Widow Rebekka [Ane Dahl Torp] marries the much older Otto [Ralph Carlsson] under the impression that this will provide her with financial security. This turns out not to be the case, so it is up to her eldest daughter Elvira [Lea Myren] to end all uncertainty by ensuring that Prince Julian [Isac Calmroth] will choose her as his bride during a glorified beauty pageant. However, Elvira is not the prettiest, so she is trained by Sophie von Kronenberg [Cecilia Forss] and her physical shortcomings are remedied (without anaesthetic) by Dr. Esthétique [Adam Lundgren] with some help from Elvira's sister Alma [Flo Fagerli]. However, the more attractive stepsister Agnes [Thea Sofie Loch Nœss] threatens to spoil the fun. Myren is a revelation in her feature film debut and Blichfeldt makes short work of the clichés of fairy tale films and stories in an equally shocking and hilarious way. The scenes with Dr. Esthétique ("Un, deux … trois!") are a black comedy masterclass. Absolutely NOT recommended for people who have cosmetic surgery on their schedule.

An effective Norwegian body horror take on the classic Cinderella fairy tale. A bit too dreamy in atmosphere here and there, and I wasn't particularly impressed with the cinematography and design, but the cast delivers strong performances, and the plot is compelling and appropriately gruesome. Especially towards the finale, the film boasts several moments that linger long in the memory.

A fun alternative version of the Cinderella story, following Elvira—one of the stepsisters, not particularly beautiful but someone willing to do anything to marry Prince Charming (Julian, his name is here). This dark comedy, but also a body horror, perfectly portrays her ambition, and especially her medieval cosmetic surgeries. There are, of course, all sorts of nods to unattainable beauty ideals, but the tone remains fairly light with a dark humor. As befits a fairy tale, it's simply Cinderella who wins in the end and doesn't succumb to Elvira's manipulations. In fact, Elvira ends up with self-mutilation and less beauty than she started with. Frankly, I found the body horror quite gross, although that's also because I'm not really into medical procedures. But as a film, it was refreshing and entertaining.
