Apparently, the world is waiting for dozens of annual rip-offs of The Exorcist, even though none of them can even compare to William Friedkin's masterpiece. The Ritual is another one of those, with a script riddled with clichés and lacking any interesting or suspenseful element. The film lurches from one hopeless scene to the next, without ever captivating a single moment. Dan Stevens is terribly bad in the lead role, and Al Pacino is in it too.

A decent reconstruction of a "true" case, which, however, loses considerable momentum in the second half. Director David Midell opts for a gritty and realistic approach, striking a balance between exorcism and doubt. Dan Stevens and Al Pacino deliver solid leading roles, and the film is visually atmospheric, but the second half struggles considerably more to sustain this. As a result, more and more imaginative influences emerge, and Stevens' skepticism about the things he sees becomes frustrating. Furthermore, the tension fades somewhat into the background. Abigail Cowen makes an intimidating impression as the demonic victim, and the horror scenes are largely well-executed, but Midell should have gotten more out of this film to justify his (visual) approach.

I thought Stevens's performance in Downton Abbey was quite decent. After that, I saw him in a few American films, and it was clear: he's not talented; he's terrible in this film as well.

There's nothing wrong with a good horror film about an exorcism, but that's the problem: they're all weak imitations of the original; this one is even a horrible imitation. And Al is ready for retirement; he's long since lost the actor he was in his heyday... pulp.
