On June 1, 1975, a Greek multimillionaire [Willem Dafoe] hosts a private party on his private island for the first time since the tragic death of his son. The occasion is his daughter's [Vic Carmen Sonnee] 25th birthday, but both father and daughter want to use this opportunity for a dramatic announcement. Beautifully filmed and well-acted, but in terms of substance, it doesn't go much further than a soap opera about an extremely wealthy family.

What a strange, disjointed film. You just keep hoping that something is finally going to happen… until suddenly the credits start. The comparison to the sublime The White Lotus is truly completely ridiculous.

You know, they've already made a movie about me, Forster.

You mean The Godfather?

No, it's about a big shark.

A beautiful film.

Especially the visuals, then, and although that might be obvious given the setting on a small island in the Mediterranean with the proverbial blue, including photogenic jetties, boats with brass fittings, and a beautifully restored old villa. And there walks a Vic Carmen Sonne around in various loose-fitting bathrobes. A shooting gallery for DOP Gris Jordana, and she doesn't miss a single opportunity.

The cast is just as beautiful, featuring Willem Dafoe besides VCS, of course, and enough beautiful people to fill a fine birthday party. Well, Joe Cole might look a tad out of place there, but that was what the story was about, after all. What also stands out is the list of producers, from regular to executive to supervising to assistant. There are no fewer than 31 of them, and that reminds me of that brilliant moment in State and Main (2000).

But yeah, that story. Based on a book, from what I understand, and then I immediately assume it will be better. What is rather missing from the film, in any case, is exactly why this story about this unpleasant family just had to be told.

But it is nice looking at the pictures, and that is worth something too.
