Children of the Cult plot

“Children of the Cult” is an international investigation into the Rajneesh movement. This was one of the world’s largest and most successful cults, with communes in over 30 countries in the 1970s and 1980s. But until now, a central truth about the organization has remained hidden. Filmmaker Maroesja Perizonius, herself a child of the communes, has come into contact with other former commune children and together they have decided to change that. Part retrospective, part investigative, this film tells the scarcely credible story of the treatment of children within the cult. Children who grew up separated from their parents in an environment where sex was everywhere and where no boundaries existed.

The controversial documentary series Wild, Wild Country was the direct inspiration for Perizonius to create this documentary. As a child, she was part of the Bhagwan community, the central focus of the documentary, and felt there was insufficient attention paid to sexual morality within that community. She speaks with others in the same situation, as well as people who, as adults, had sex with minors in an environment where it was not only permitted but even encouraged. This is at least as controversial as the series that inspired this documentary.
