Yes, if there is one composer who deserves his own documentary, it is John Williams. What fantastic and recognizable film music the best man has made and what passion he puts into writing these pieces. And still, at the age of 92; a great man! At the top for fifty years!

This documentary interestingly shows how John Williams from a "simple" piano player with enormous potential accidentally ends up in the Hollywood scene, and makes a splash with his musical creativity. The documentary is of course full of Williams' music. His music is pure emotion! From epic hits in Saving Private Ryan and amazing adventurous tunes in Jurassic Park and Indiana Jones, to the tearjerker in Schindler's List. And then Star Wars, not to forget... Ooh, what an oeuvre!

A pleasure to listen to, of course, because of Williams' great oeuvre, and the many film fragments and images from his career complement it visually beautifully.

Especially interesting that the maestro himself speaks. You prefer to hear the anecdotes and experiences from the man himself than from other talking heads. Better that the living legend himself can (and wants to) have his say, instead of it being an in memoriam. That way we also get to know the man behind the music better, he comes across as more accessible and nicer than I thought.

The praise from his colleagues, friends and film directors is sometimes a bit too much of a good thing, but hey, it is justified.

4*

90-something John Williams is still very active as a composer and occasionally as a conductor. Bouzereau opens this biographical documentary with a series of complimentary soundbites that indicate that we should not expect any critical notes. It helps that John(ny) Williams had already built up an impressive career before he started his successful collaboration with Steven Spielberg in 1974 and that he knows how to talk about it in an engaging way. Unfortunately, Bouzereau mainly kicks in doors by focusing on popular scores and that means that there is little new under the sun for film music connoisseurs. Personally, I think it is a shame that Alfred Hitchcock's Family Plot is not discussed, but the decision to let Coldplay frontman Chris Martin speak is truly unforgivable!
