Powstanie Warszawskie plot

This docudrama tells the story of the Warsaw Uprising as seen by two young brothers, filmmakers of Uprising Chronicles, commissioned by the Propaganda Bureau of the Armia Krajowa. They are direct witnesses of the street fighting against the Germans and dream of filming the “real” war. At first, however, they document the lives of the capital’s citizens. Then they delve deeper into the real fighting. Eventually, they manage to join one of the combat units, which they follow in action.

It should be noted that the (spoken) audio fragments, although based on contemporary newsreels, reports and letters, are largely fictional. The two brothers, Karol and Witek, are in short fictional main characters who manipulate the viewer a little. However, this docudrama form does not detract from the restored and coloured archive images. The visuals actually say enough, but the dramatised story is not annoying and at times even strengthens it. You really start to empathise with the brothers when all hell breaks loose. The sound of the screaming woman was chilling and just kept going. Likewise the final scene of the snorting, runaway horses in a shot-up Warsaw. It doesn't get more apocalyptic than that.

Halfway through the documentary, there is also a poster from Philips. The management helped people in hiding and many factory workers joined the resistance movement. The Wysocki-Philips factory in Warsaw was razed to the ground by the Nazis, just like the rest of the city, after the failed uprising in 1944.

The Warsaw Uprising should not be confused with the ghetto uprising a year earlier. Although there are parallels, the objectives were different. It was not for nothing that the Red Army, having advanced to the eastern bank of the Vistula, was not allowed to intervene on Stalin's orders, and even shot down Allied supply flights. A national liberation by the Polish partisans was not to be allowed under any circumstances, with a view to the formation of communist satellite states.
