It's been a while since I saw a film by director Paul WS Anderson that I was enthusiastic about. I think I have to go back to Death Race from 2008. After that it was mainly mopping with the tap open, with this incoherent trifle as the current low point. Apparently based on a short story by George RR Martin, but don't expect a grandiose and compelling spectacle. No one is impressed by the excess of flashy CGI anymore and Milla Jovovich gives one of her worst roles ever here. Dave Bautista can still get by. In terms of lighting it all looks quite nice and I didn't get bored, but you start to wonder what the target audience of a film like this is. Neither fish nor fowl.

Mediocre fantasy action film. The story is simple and contains a somewhat surprising twist. The execution is not that great. The film is still fairly passable, but it is not great. Almost everything is computer-generated and that makes it all a bit less exciting and rather soulless. Except for a few scenes it is not interesting. The acting is also not great and Jovovich is somewhat miscast for this role. Visually, as mentioned, a lot of computer work and therefore very fake. 2.0/2.5
