Bi Gan's films are vague and puzzle-like, but with a little prior knowledge, this film is reasonably easy to follow. In a world where people strive for biological but meaningless immortality (just as an extinguished flame is immortal), a sort of Blade Runners hunt down people who are still dreaming, because in dreams time and reality are distorted. In the film, a woman goes after such a dreamer who has hidden himself inside the film. She takes pity on the dreamer and lets him dream five more dreams in the form of five short films, tracing film history as well as the six senses: the silent German Expressionist film (sight) of the early 20th century, the film noir/spy film (hearing) of the 1940s, the Japanese Buddhist folktale (taste) of the 1950s/60s, the neorealist Hong Kong film (smell) of the 1970s/80s, and the neon-style gangster romance (touch) of the late 20th century. The framing narrative offers meta-reflection (sense: mind): the film (the imagination) may well come to an end, for dreams are temporary, but dreams also give us meaning and make us human. Fantasy is, as it were, the flame that admittedly burns us out but also allows us to rise again from the death of our material existence.

The film is admittedly long, but actually consists of five shorter films, none of which are truly strong, yet they captivate through their style and stylistic shifts. Above all, the film is a sensually stimulating ode to film and the era of the 20th century, when film allowed humanity to dream grandly and collectively, and in that respect, it is worth seeing.
