"Every life is a universe all its own."
The world seems to be coming to an end and everyone feels the urge to bid a nice farewell to a certain Charles "Chuck" Krantz. Marty feels haunted by this Chuck, an ordinary accountant whose face he nevertheless sees on billboards, shop windows and on television. However, the two gentlemen have a number of people in common, such as Marty's ex-wife, her colleague and his neighbour. As a child, Chuck received some life lessons from his grandfather Albie, who passed on to him, among other things, his passion for dancing. In addition, Albie kept a big secret hidden in the attic.

Three acts from the life of Charles Krantz in reverse order. In the presence of his wife [Saidah Arrika Ekulona] and his son [Antonio Paul Garcia], 39-year-old Charles Krantz [Tom Hiddleston] is about to breathe his last breath due to a brain tumor. At the same time, much of California is destroyed, the Internet goes down and chaos reigns. A burned-out teacher [Chiwetel Ejiofor] reaches out to his ex-wife [Karen Gillan] while it increasingly looks like the world is ending. Nine months earlier, the then still fit Charles makes contact with a street drummer [The Pocket Queen] and a woman [Annaliso Basso] who has just been told that she has broken up. The bulk of the film focuses on Chuck as a child [Benjamin Pajak] and his coming of age as he grows up with his grandfather [Mark Hamill] and grandmother [Q'orianka Kilcher]. Fans of 80s movies will love the supporting roles of Mia Sara (Ferris Bueller's Day Off) and Heather Langenkamp (The Nightmare On Elm Street). The hype would have us believe that this is a modern version of It's A Wonderful Life (which also has a scene with stars and a dance), but this falls far short (partly, but not exclusively, due to an unsatisfying, hackneyed denouement). Moreover, there are unnecessary quotes from the Stephen King novel on which this is based.

Ambitious drama film with imaginative touches, with which director Mike Flanagan clearly indicated that he wanted to try something other than horror scenes. The Life of Chuck consists of three chapters that follow each other in non-chronological order, of which the first chapter is by far the best chapter. The film starts off apocalyptic and mysterious, which immediately introduces the viewer to an unpredictable world. That manages to captivate for a while, but then the film turns into thick sentiment that only comes to life with drawn-out dance steps. The acting is not brilliant, the choice of music is too emphatically on top and the narrative voice adds very little. Flanagan searches for originality a few times, but that layer is actually used too little. The first 40 minutes and some nice parts in between nevertheless ensure a narrow pass.
