Tokyo, early 1940s. Tetsuko, known to everyone as Totto-Chan, is a lively little girl who makes life difficult for her teacher, who eventually sends her home. Nice movie though. Not much happens the whole movie and every now and then that takes its revenge with the pacing. But still, this is a sweet movie where the world of children is beautifully depicted. Often realistic and sometimes dreamy in which a child can escape for a while. Well and beautifully done. Endearing characters make it complete.

Visually okay although the lips are animated a bit strangely (and also disturbing) and I also miss a bit of magic that I often have with other anime. I can't really put my finger on it because the whole is quite beautiful, full of details and what I normally like. But for my feeling also a bit sterile. 3.5*.

Totto-chan is an energetic and curious girl who causes problems at school with her impulsive behavior. Until she and her mother [Anne Watanabe] visit Tomoe Gakuen, a special school with train cars as classrooms and the loving and patient Mr. Kobayashi [Kôji Yakusho] as the principal. Totto-chan immediately feels at home and makes friends with Yasuaki, a timid classmate with polio. The story begins in 1940, when the consequences of the war are not yet immediately noticeable. That changes after the attack on Pearl Harbor, and as a result this is not only a compelling portrait of a special friendship, but also of Japan during the war years. Endearing voice performances and a few beautiful fantasy sequences are more than enough to give you a lump in your throat. Based on the autobiographical novel by Tetsuko Kuroyanagi, who herself spoke the epilogue.
