In 2015, journalist Shiori Itô had a business dinner with Noriyuki Yamagochi, the head of a prominent Japanese media company, about a possible job. Security camera footage shows her getting out of a taxi and entering her hotel late that evening, dazed. She believes Yamagochi drugged her and then raped her, and decides to sue Yamagochi. She recorded the incident on camera, partly in the form of a diary in which she expresses her thoughts and emotions. The case became a media sensation in Japan and was the basis for the Japanese #MeToo movement. The big problem, of course, is that rape is almost impossible to prove without witnesses or concrete evidence. Itô naturally assumes that you believe she was actually raped, and her intention was to encourage other victims. But if you start from the principle that someone is only guilty after a court has convicted them, this feels quite uncomfortable.
