Terstall is on a nostalgia trip, and he forgets to make a film, let alone a good one. I'm not a fan of films like these that stumble from highlight to highlight (many biopics suffer from this too; I'm thinking of a monstrosity like The Iron Lady), but the parts in between are also completely uninteresting, with few engaging characters that resemble amateur theatrics. Even the music from that era is mostly greatest hits and never really fits the visuals of the time, but seems haphazardly used to tick off all the boxes. The acting is inconsistent, but on average, on the poor side. The film also looks incredibly amateurish at times. The background in the Haagse Bos, for example, was clearly fake, but scenes on the street or during the fog competition look completely empty, as if there were only 20 extras available.

The most captivating part was the story surrounding the Moroccan boy, in this case, because Terstall is still trying to make a film there, and those parts were a welcome change. Although the racism and social criticism aren't exactly subtly incorporated, making it neither a drama nor a comedy (both could have been achieved if you'd gone all out). Or perhaps the film could have been based solely around a few soccer matches (like the film Steve Jobs, which also only features three moments around a presentation), although the fake cheering could have been left out.

A few isolated moments still work, the dialogue is okay, and Petzoldt, in particular, shines in every scene she's in. 1.5*

A partial film adaptation of Onno G. De Becker's novel of the same name. Bram Suijker plays his alter ego, an aspiring writer who befriends Gijs [Reinout Scholten Van Asschat] in Amsterdam and, through his sister and Dolle Mina Lianne [Annemaaike Bakker], meets his muse [Roberta Patzoldt]. In Morocco, he hopes Abdelkarim [Ibrahim Ben Hadi] can find work in the Netherlands to support his family financially. This coming-of-age drama unfolds from the legendary football match between Ajax and Liverpool in December 1966 to the coronation of Beatrix on April 30, 1980. The extremely messy script consists of superficial, sometimes extremely short scenes. Bianca van der Steen (makeup), Zuma Pleijzier (set design), Britt Benschop, and Esther Edenburg (costumes) deserve praise for their work, and there's a great soundtrack with music by Shocking Blue, Golden Earring, Earth & Fire, Supersister, and Focus. However, the poor script and often incomprehensible dialogue make this a very difficult film to sit through.

Nice film about the zeitgeist. Not a very strong storyline.
