In an alternate world history shaped by superheroes, once-celebrated "costumed adventurers" have been banned by a society disenchanted with vigilantes. Now, in 1985, the murder of the Comedian, a hero turned government agent, draws the attention of Rorschach, the last of the outlawed vigilantes. Rorschach's research entangles his retired colleagues Nite Owl, Silk Specter, Dr. Manhattan and Ozymandias are in conflict with their past, with each other and in a mystery that threatens their lives and a world on the brink of war.

Since the Keene Act of 1977 banned the Masked Crusaders from operating on their own, the former Watchmen have retired. Jonathan Osterman [Corey Burton] and Edward Blake [Rick D. Wasserman] are the only ones who remain in government service. When The Comedian is murdered, Walter Kovacs [Titus Welliver] believes a serial killer is out to kill all the former superheroes. Jonathan, but also Dan Dreiberg and Sally Jupiter, believe it is a political settling of scores and force Kovacs to go on his own investigation as Rorschach. Vietti wisely sticks to a comic-style animation style and features a fine voice cast in this engaging first of a two-part series that is somewhat undermined by a separate storyline (told and shown as a comic) whose connection to the main story is rather tenuous.

Apart from subtle differences with the live action film no surprises. The differences with the graphic novel were also known and this one is even more true to the book. Including the Black Freighter parts that never interested me because I found them rather monotonous.
It is beautifully drawn in a modern but sober style. I sometimes missed the visual flair of Snyder's film. Laurie looks great though. Nice for the fans. Maybe it would have been more interesting to go deeper with new stories.
