La Nuit de Varennes plot
June 1791. The controversial writer Restif de la Bretonne sees a lady-in-waiting of Marie-Antoinette secretly leave Paris one evening. He concludes from this that Louis XVI and his family have already fled with the capital. Unable to contain his curiosity to witness this historic event, he gives chase. On his way he meets none other than the elderly master seducer Casanova. By a chance coincidence, the lady-in-waiting, the writer and Casanova end up in the same carriage with an American philosopher and the political agitator Thomas Paine. This leads to all kinds of philosophical and political discussions along the way.
