The main character's view of her country seems more Western. But at the same time, she is someone who cannot stand injustice, a sentiment that also applies to the Indian population. They protest en masse against the lax government, both in this film and in real life.

Really sad to see that the law is such a beautiful thing on paper, but doesn't mean a damn thing in real life. Changing this is a hopeless task, no matter how much hope and motivation you have. Read my full review here.

I see too few films from India and that is actually a shame. If you step outside the paths of Bollywood, you are presented with particularly fascinating films in which you as a Westerner end up in a real culture shock. Those villages and cities are one big anthill of bustle and chaos. We meet a young widow who inherits the job of a husband and starts working for the local police.

It is a fairly feminist film in which patriarchy is lurking around the corner. It is hardly taken seriously by men and other inequalities such as caste and corruption are also lurking around the corner. Santosh has to hold his own and does so quite well. It is also a socially critical film in which the police hardly fight crime. It is striking how rape is viewed and it is a free pass for many men.
