The film is about a young woman (Emma Roberts) who wants to make her dream come true and, in the process, meets her dream man. Contrary to what the title might suggest, Space Cadet is a romantic comedy, although director and writer Liz W. Garret only allows the romantic aspect to flourish later in the film. Before then, the film focuses prominently on main character Rex and her experiences going through the astronaut program. Here and there the viewer gains some insight into underlying emotional issues that play a role in Rex, but they do not receive much attention. Garcia looks for the frivolous rather than the emotional.

So light-hearted and humorous. An excellent starting point. The film is suitable for it. It is therefore very annoying that nothing funny comes along during the course. You could say that something funny can be distilled from the basic story about a person in a strange environment. Sometimes it is as if the film deliberately does not want to make the complete transition to humor. Apparently the intention is to take the character Rex seriously. It could also be that Garcia has a different view of humor than I do. Or maybe she's just humorless. Or maybe I am. The fact is that I couldn't laugh at anything.

The characters are completely uninteresting. Everyone is a walking cliché. No one stands out for any degree of originality. There is no question of any empathy for a character. The romantic entanglements do not arouse any emotion either. Space Cadet is a boring movie. A film that wants to tell stories of big dreams, but does not know how to convey that content at all in a passionate, humorous or exciting way.

I actually wasn't planning on watching this movie at all, but it ended up playing after I finished a series. And honestly, I didn't mind that at all. Is it a winner, no, certainly not. But I was never bored for a moment and found it quite funny. Emma Roberts plays it very nicely. A 7 is a bit high, but unfortunately I cannot give a 6.5. Nice movie that you don't have to think about too much.

Emma Roberts is great to watch and this film is easy to watch. But that's about all the positives are there.

First of all you really have to turn off your brain and then this movie. Because man man it is really stupid what is happening here. Sometimes it is childish. And then it is not even really that funny. Dave Foley is in this movie but his comedic talent remains unused.

The love story is rather superficial and dull. It is incredibly unbelievable. That is because the tone is rather serious but what happens really does not make sense. It just does not fit together. And it is too sweet, real American sweet with those trumpet musics.

As the end progresses it does get worse. The idea and beginning of the training was funny. But the ending really hits Gerrit like a ton of tongs. This review is probably funnier than this movie.

2 stars.
